A ticking Nuclear Bomb of Healthcare - NCT of Delhi

Let us understand current state of affairs with health care in NCT of Delhi and fallacious situation under current AAP government.

Delhi have 60,000 doctors, which are registered with DELHI Medical Council (DMC).

According to a DMC official, the top hospitals which are allegedly under the scanner of DMC include Max Healthcare, BLK Hospital, Apollo Hospital, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Metro Hospitals, Rockland Hospital, St Stephen Hospital, Balaji Hospital, Jaipur Golden Hospital, Hedgewar Hospital, Lady Hardinge Hospital, Maharaja Agrasen Hospital and Madan Mohan Malviya Hospital.


The complaints that DMC receives are related to medical negligence, inflated bills, quacks practicing medicine or running their clinics.

Apart from this, most private/ clinics hospitals have become clique of big pharma companies in benefit of regular gifts and international conferences to the doctors; profit margins is what makes the deal attractive.

While Mohalla Clinic a temporary porta cabin met a total failure and waste of fund in creating only TRP and not any solid healthcare foundation for next 30-40 years. There is not a single hospital added by Delhi government in last 3 years in a city; which is already short of it during every year H1N1, Dengue and water borne diseases season.

In the latest case of Max Hospital; 22 weeks premature, was declared dead by the hospital on November 30 and handed over to the parents in a plastic bag but one of the twin babies was found alive after being declared dead by the doctors.

This is mistake of doctors attending them that they didn’t followed the protocol set by IMA. However, cancelling the license and the decision to shut the entire hospital is irrational and autocratic. Delhi government is clearly saving the hospital owner and let them escape the FIRs.

Max Hospital Group has more than 12 hospitals in Delhi-NCR itself and this shutting down hospital will not stand scrutiny in court of law.

The Solution!

In an attempt to regulate healthcare services in India, the Centre is pushing for adoption of the Clinical Establishment Act by State Governments to curb malpractices in private hospitals after two glaring instances of alleged profiteering and medical negligence grabbed headlines recently.

Chief Ministers of all states have been asked by the Centre to adopt and implement the Clinical Establishment (Registration and Regulation) Act, 2010 to curb malpractices in private health sector.


Under the Act, doctors or healthcare facilities may face criminal proceedings under Indian Penal Code, including cancellation of their medical license, if found guilty of medical negligence. The wide discrepancy in healthcare facilities available to the hapless patient has left them feeling cheated and robbed besides compromising on patient safety.


According to the Health Minister JP Nadda, the Act is ”a model code of clinical establishment” that state governments can adopt.


National Capital Region of Delhi is yet to adopt this; we believe it’s soon implemented to go into cases regarding services being provided by private facilities so that such glaring lapses are not repeated.
However, Delhi government dearth governance and most ministers gripped in corruption cases including health minister satyendra Jain; it will be manifestation to imagine anything will change soon for Delhi public.
